West Shore Detachment
International Fleet Review June 9 -14, 2010

The Canadian Naval Centennial will be marked by international fleet reviews in Halifax and Victoria in the summer 2010. Twenty-eight navies that operate in the Indo-Pacific Region have been invited to send ships to Victoria June 9 to 14 to join the Canadian Navy Pacific Fleet at the Royal Roads anchorage. It is anticipated that 12 visiting ships will participate and upwards of 8,000 foreign sailors will visit during the week.

The international fleet review events begin on June 11 with a "parade of nations" in downtown Victoria featuring the sailors of the visiting nations. In the evening there will be a fireworks display. On June 12, the visiting ships will gather alongside ships of the Canadian Fleet Pacific at the Royal Roads anchorage for the ceremonial review when the Canadian Navy flagship, carries the reviewing officer through the lines of ships at anchor. Following the sail past, there will be a display by the Canadian Forces "Skyhawks" skydiving team, a flypast by maritime aircraft and the spectacle will conclude with a performance by the Canadian Air Force "Snowbirds" Air Demonstration Squadron.

Ships from various nations including the nuclear aircraft carrier U.S.S. Ronald Reagan will be arriving off the shore of the Esquimalt Lagoon on June 9th and 10th. Most will enter Esquimalt Harbour but the carrier and possibly others will be mooring off the lagoon. This on its own typically attracts numerous visitors down to the lagoon.

The events that will be impacting West Shore Detachment will be occurring Friday June 11th and Saturday June 12th.

June 11th

• 1200hrs- all ships involved in the Review will move to their designated anchorage positions off Esquimalt Lagoon.
• 1800hrs- ‘LUMINARA’ event opens at Fort Rodd Hill
• 22hrs- fireworks display from barge offshore of Lagoon

June 12th

• 1000-1130 - Fleet Review by Govenor General aboard reviewing ship
• 1100-1600 - Beer Garden and events at Fort Rodd Hill
• 1100-1145 - SkyHawks Show - Landing Zone on Royal Roads University lawn
• 1200-1230 - Canadian Forces Aircraft Flypast (Sea King/Cormorant/historic aircraft)
• 1230-1330 - Snowbirds Show

These events are expected to draw thousands of people into the area of Esquimalt Lagoon, Fort Rodd Hill, and Royal Roads University. West Shore RCMP primary task will be crowd and traffic management in these areas.

Spectators are encouraged to use public transit.

The lagoon bridge will be open for one-way traffic Friday evening and all day Saturday. Traffic flow will be from the lagoon north to the Western Transit Exchange. Vehicles will be allowed to park on the lagoon causeway.

West Shore RCMP members will meet and greet visitors to the event areas. They will be there to remind the public that alcohol possession and campfires are not allowed in the park and also to re-direct vehicles away from the park as the parking situation dictates.
