Yesterday afternoon, two Colwood teens who face a challenging disability every day, saw their dreams realized with a presentation by RCMP Staff Sgt. Marc Alexander, on behalf of the Sunshine Dreams for Kids Foundation.  Inspector Ted Smith and Chief Superintendent Randy Wilson were also on hand to help fulfill these dreams.

S/Sgt. Marc Alexander surprises Joshua (left), and Miranda (right), while their mom Barb, and brother J.D. look on.The lives of these siblings, 15 year old Joshua and 14 year old Miranda, are impacted by Usher Syndrome, which causes impairment to vision and hearing, and over time, may rob them of their sight.  Miranda also has Down's Syndrome.  This is the time for their dreams to come true, while they can enjoy the sights and sounds of the world around them.

The Sunshine Dreams for Kids Foundation has made it possible for Joshua, who is a huge fan of all things medieval, to travel to Scotland on June 18th to experience the castles and historic landmarks of Britain.  Miranda, who is a Disney fanatic, will be in the Magical Kingdom of Disneyland on August 19th.

S/Sgt. Marc Alexander puts smiles on the faces of Joshua (rear), and Miranda (right). Brother J.D. (left) got a few surprises too!The genuine smiles on the faces of two very deserving teens said it all yesterday.  The surprise was announced with the arrival of Mounties clad in Red Serge, with lights and sirens blaring, into the driveway of the family home in Colwood.  The teen's mom, Barb, expressed her appreciation, explaining that these journeys would not be possible for the family, without the help of the Sunshine Foundation, and it's supporters.   "They wanted to see the real thing, and now they're going to be able to see it before their vision goes", says Barb.

The quote that sums this day up, goes to Joshua..."This is awesome!"

The Sunshine Foundation of Canada makes dreams come true for children who are challenged by severe physical disabilities or life-threatening illnesses. Sunshine was founded in 1987 by a Canadian police officer who lost his teen aged son to muscular dystrophy. Sunshine is now a national organization with volunteer chapters across Canada. In its 21-year history, Sunshine has fulfilled more than 6,500 dreams, ranging from family trips to celebrity meetings, and gifts like computers and customized bicycles. Sunshine Dreams allow children to escape from the daily regimen and challenges of living with a severe physical disability or life-threatening illness.
